How to become a Successful Freelancer?

When you firmly decide to choose Freelancing as a full-time career, you should utilize the time between quitting the job and become a skilled Freelance to optimize your skills and improve communication skill. Freelancer is a multitasking and multi-skilled person.

Be prepared before Freelancing

Before starting your Freelancing journey, you must be prepared first!

Uninterrupted Internet Access

Laptop, Desktop or mobile with Internet connectivity

Build the list of people whom you know in your industry and can be your potential clients.

Read and study about how Freelancing Economy actually works.

“Good start is half done”

First ready with all the required tools and then start working. So that in the future, you can properly concentrate on your clients and the improvement of your skills.

Set Up Goals

Freelancing means you are developing your own business and without goals, there is no meaning of starting the business.

What I did first? I first set the realistic goals for 30 days before leaving my 9 to 5 job. Here I am sharing some tips on how to set up goals.

•    Hear your inner voice what kind of business and life you want

as a freelancer. We spend most of the time to find new clients or do the best work for satisfying existing clients. In such hustle don’t forget why you are doing all these and what lifestyle you want as a Freelancer.

•    Divide your vision into long term goals and short-term goals

Completing short term goals on time will help you to achieve long term goals.

•    Set SMART goals

When you achieve your goals, you feel confident. So, it is advisable to always craft SMART goals. SMART goals are measurable and real to achieve easily.

S- Specific: Be definite for what you are trying to do

M- Measurable: Set measurable goals

A- Achievable: Reasonable to achieve

R- Relevant: Relevant to the future of your carrier

T-Time-bound: Set deadline to achieve goals

SMART Goal Examples:

“Get two long term Social Media client by 1st May”

“Design five Logos for clients by 30th April”

“Develop a website for five clients by 10th May”

Don’t hustle in trying everything

As a new Freelancer you agree with any kind of work offered by the clients. But think twice when accepting any project. You probably don’t know how to do work and you waste a lot of time in learning a new skill to complete the project on time.

Suppose if you are a client whom you want to appoint “Specialist” or “Generalist”?  But obviously, you will choose a specialist who is pro. So, it is better to expertise skills of your interest. Don’t try to hustle in everything. Make yourself a brand in your industry.

Identify your skills and interest (Niche)

What to do when you are not able to find what is your interest?

Don’t worry! Just go through the services you can offer to clients as a freelancer. Study all the skills like SEO, Social Media Expert, Advertising Expert, Web Designing, Content Writing, or Virtual Assistant for a week or 10 to 15 days.

In these 15 days, you will get an answer what is your interest and what is the most suitable skill for you according to your past experience and knowledge.

If you are aware of Freelancing services and you know what is your interest, you need not worry about other factors. Be pro in your skill and get clients very easily.

Improve skills to get paid high in fewer clients

Every day spend 2 hours in developing your skill and start learning online. I personally online courses and it will be very helpful as a beginner. Take advanced courses as well.

Be Organized and Make Schedule

Be your own personal assistant. Having many clients and projects, you have to juggle around different work and completing projects on time. Set a calendar and divide your schedule and fix the hours to work for each client.

Schedule breaks and give time to your self to produce the best out of your skills. Follow the schedule strictly. Set the time for answering emails, meeting with new clients, bidding on projects, administrative and invoicing your work.

Don’t behave like a horror Freelancer who does not eat or have showers to meet the deadlines.

Deal with clients professionally and wisely

Be clear about what are your services and what you don’t want to offer. Always say “NO” when the project is not meeting your skill because it will only delay and distract you from the projects of your field. It will give you a short time benefit but not good for long time business.

Suppose you are keen to write the content of specific niche and you choose a project that is not related to your niche, you have to spend hours and hours to research and understand the concept clearly. It is a waste of time actually; you can work for two more projects of your niche at the same time.

Showcase your expertise

Build an impressive portfolio that shout loud about your creativity and experience. If you are a beginner and not having anything to show, you can describe where you work, how you will provide service and how you are different from others. You can make a professional proposal or online resume to get the involvement of clients.

Where to find potential clients?

Finding potential clients is not difficult because of the Internet and many Freelancing sites. There is a number of Freelancing sites available on the Internet. I started with Upwork and Fiverr. I recommend the same to find clients globally.

How Upwork works?

Build a strong profile on Upwork to get noticed by the clients. Fill all the details very carefully. On Upwork clients post hundreds of projects and they are also ready to pay high for the best creative work.

You can repetitively work with the same clients and it provides a secure platform where clients and Freelancers cannot cheat each other. Upwork mobile facilitates Freelancers and clients to chat, deliver digital projects, and give reviews and rating.

How Fiverr works?

Fiverr is the Freelancing platform where you can show your skills not in your profile but on Gigs also. Gigs are a small piece of your overall services. Clients can find you through your Gigs. I will say that Gigs are like proposals and you get hired. Define every small detail on your Gigs so that clients can find you perfect for their projects.

Tips to get clients on Upwork and Fiverr

Build a confident and professional image in front of potential client by providing details of your skill and experience in your profile.

First, understand the job, read the job description carefully and then apply for the job. Don’t apply just to earn money, it creates a negative impact.

Listen to your clients and understand what they want from you. Ask questions regarding the project if you have any doubt. Communicate with client insincere manner and show your professionalism.

Use Invoicing software or number your Invoice properly. Track record of Invoices, clients and expenditure for future benefits. Keep a separate credit card or bank account for Freelancing work.

Be prepared for the interview or trial job to showcase your skill. Always implement ethical ways to deal with clients. Complete your projects on time and don’t forget to get a review from the client. The review will enrich your profile.

Your knowledge, skills, honesty, dedication, commitment, passion and integrity are keys to success to get the projects consistently. Regularly study new tools and tricks to enhance your skill.

Conclusion: Freelancing is a wonderful job; meeting new people, communicating with them; updating yourself with new trends and getting a number of satisfied and happy clients. Your online profiles over different Freelancing websites and reviews of the clients make you a brand!
